Gar Alperovitz on his book America Beyond Capitalism: Reclaiming Our Wealth, Our Liberty, and Our Democracy, which you can find in the No Lies Radio Web-Store.

“America Beyond Capitalism comes at a critical time in our history-when we all know our system isn’t working but we are not sure what can be done about it. This book takes us outside the confines of orthodox thinking, imagines a new way of living together, and then brings that vision back into reality with a set of eminently practical ideas that promise a truly democratic society.”

Radical Abundance: A Theology of Sustainability

Korten launches Agenda for a New Economy at historic church in the heart of Wall Street

The historic Trinity Church, founded in 1697 in the heart of what is now Wall Street, hosted a national conference of faith leaders January 21-23, 2009, the day after the presidential inauguration of Barack Obama. The topic of the conference was “Radical Abundance: A Theology of Sustainability,” which addressed the need and opportunity to advance an economic transformation for justice and sustainability. More than 80 congregations across the United States participated via webcast and organized discussion groups based on professionally designed study guides.

Agenda for a New Economy: From Phantom Wealth to Real Wealth. was launched at this conference. See David's report.

You can view Korten's conference presentation "Spiritual Awakening, a New Economy, and the End of Empire" on the Trinity website. An edited print version of the presentation will appear in the March-April 2009 issue of Tikkun magazine.

Trinity Institute will produce a book and DVD on the conference proceedings to further spread the conversation beyond the original participants. Contact: Angelica Roman-Jimenez, aroman@trinitywallstreet.org or Wall Street Trinity Institute for more information.

The featured speakers were:
Majora Carter, famed South Bronx community organizer and co-chair of Green for All,
Sister Miriam MacGillis, founder of Genesis Farm and recipient of the 2005 Thomas Berry Award for her ministry on the new cosmology.
Timothy J. Gorringe, a leader in environmental theology from the UK.
Rev. Nestor Miguez, from Buenos Aires, Argentina, a leader in articulating a Latin American perspective on the life and teachings of Jesus.
David Korten, author of The Great Turning: From Empire to Earth Community and board chair of YES! magazine.

David offered this observation prior to the conference:

“Given the timing, reach, and location of this conference,I can scarcely imagine a more favorable opportunity to make a historic contribution to framing a new national conversation on the redesign of an economy that has failed environmentally, socially, and now financially. The conference organizers intend to highlight the relationship between spiritual awakening and economic transformation in the service of justice and sustainability. My presentation will frame the moral choice between money and life and the ways in which Wall Street has reproduced the historic practice of debt bondage on a national and global scale to maintain the structures of domination and expropriation that the world’s great religions have condemned for thousands of years.

"The publication schedule for Agenda for a New Economy: From Phantom Wealth to Real Wealth. Why Wall Street Can't Be Fixed and How to Replace it was timed to have the book available in time to launch at this conference.

“Working with the staff of the Trinity Church Institute has been a thrilling experience. They bring an exceptional commitment, spiritual sensibility, and professionalism to the work of making this a significant national event.”

El Sistema: Social Support and Advocacy Through Musical Education

About the Lecture
Gustavo Dudamel radiates so much passion and ebullience that it requires little imagination to see him at the podium with a baton in hand. MIT’s 2010 McDermott Award in the Arts winner is, at the tender age of 29, one of the world’s top conductors and music disseminators. In conversation with two MIT music luminaries, and moderator Maria Hinojosa, Dudamel describes the remarkable music education system in Venezuela that set him on his path, and that continues to inspire his work in the U.S. and around the world.

“When El Sistema gave me an instrument, it was the best moment in my life,” says Dudamel, who attributes his success and world view in large part to Venezuela’s 35-year-old innovative music education system -- or as Dudamel characterizes it, a transformative social movement. The brainchild of economist and politician Jose Antonio Abreu, El Sistema invites children from all of Venezuela’s communities to play music and join orchestras through their school years. The result is an extraordinary national experiment that “changes the life of families and towns,” says Dudamel. “The problem with society is exclusion, and when you give an instrument to a child” you are changing the life of the family and the entire community, he says. Today, 300,000 Venezuelan children are growing up playing classical music, and learning along the way how to instruct even younger students in performance and conducting. This collaborative learning and teaching organization, says Dudamel, led him to his vocation.

MIT Media Lab professor Tod Machover watched Dudamel conduct the MIT Orchestra the night before. Machover comments that Dudamel, unlike more autocratic conductors, “found a way to combine leadership, and being part of a group.” Machover, whose own interests in technology and music encourage ways of building connections among people, views Dudamel and El Sistema as an inspiration for creating community through music-making. Dudamel responds that he doesn’t “feel like a boss as a conductor,” but more like a chef in a kitchen with his team. He comes up with an idea, and someone says “maybe this can be more salty, and you have to be open to that.”

Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Harbison notes that his only experience with state-sponsored musical “nurturing” was in Canada at a young composer program, which felt like “some form of heaven.” He doesn’t hold out much hope for a “parallel experience in concert music in the U.S.,” regretting that “we have a more affluent society which has established certain kinds of cultural values…Now we have generations of kids who haven’t heard a note of concert music or jazz, or high quality exploratory music. We have a real lacuna, a hole we need to address.” Harbison sees Dudamel as “a tremendous asset,” perhaps a crucial element in a campaign to touch a new generation in America and beyond.

Dudamel is more than willing to be a global ambassador for music-making and for breaking down barriers of all kinds. He is starting youth programs at his new home base in Los Angeles, in Korea, Germany and Italy, and also in Boston at the New England Conservatory. “We have a phrase in Venezuela -- tocar y luchar -- to play and to fight, which is also the symbol for El Systema.” The borders that exist in the world between peoples are “all in our head,” says Dudamel, “and our message through music is everyone has a chance to have a future, together.”

“Plunder: The Crime Of Our Time"

Danny Schechter Takes on Wall St. in New Film

We speak with investigative journalist, filmmaker, and author Danny Schechter, ‘the News Dissector.’ His latest film features interviews with industry insiders to reveal how the financial crisis was built on a foundation of criminal activity. It’s called “Plunder: The Crime Of Our Time.”

Plunder: The Crime of Our Time is a hard-hitting investigative film by Danny Schechter. The "News Dissector" explores how the financial crisis was built on a foundation of criminal activity uncovering the connection between the collapse of the housing market and the economic catastrophe that followed.

The film opens with the conviction of Ponzi King Bernie Madoff, whose acknowledged criminality drove a $65 billion dollar pyramid scheme. It argues that the wrong doing committed by a few individuals distracts from the real story, implicating the best-known institutions that financed and profited from fraudulent sub prime lending. This connection is now being investigated by the FBI as part of a probe into what it calls a "fraud epidemic."

PLUNDER shows how these firms created special securities to repackage and resell these dubious loans after they were re-rated as Triple A. These firms then bet against many of these toxic assets with credit default swaps and other insurance scams. By leveraging these investments, they recklessly put trillions of dollars and the world economy at risk.

To tell this story Schechter speaks with bankers involved in these activities, respected economists, insider experts, top journalists, including Paul Krugman, and even a convicted white-collar criminal, Sam Antar, who blows the whistle on intentionally dishonest practices.

The film displays how this pyramid of fraud led to the massive foreclosures affecting 10 million homeowners, rising unemployment, economic collapse and increasing hardships worldwide. It connects the dots identifying who the victims and beneficiaries are in what "may well turn out to be the greatest nonviolent crime against humanity in history," according to an ex investment banker. Graydon Carter, the Editor of Vanity Fair is quoted as saying, "in other words never before have so few done so much to so many." The film details the frustration of homeowners, who have become the hardest hit victims, as they express their anger in protest against the CEOs of these institutions.

Plunder: the Crime of Our Time looks into how the crisis developed, from the mysterious collapse of Bear Stearns, an 85-year-old investment firm that disappeared in a week to the shadowy world of trillion dollar hedge funds. Insiders who work in the industry, and know it well, tell both of these stories. Plunder also shows how hastily arranged government bailouts did not revive the economy and may have lost billions.

The film also delves into the complicity of the major media outlets, which failed to sound the alarm or investigate wrong doers. A top financial journalist and media analyst as well as a financier explain how the business media became embedded in the culture it was covering, similar to embedded reporters in Iraq.

In its conclusion, Plunder offers facts and details about events that have affected billions of people and lost trillions of dollars. The film travels to Paris to examine how this crisis has gone global. Ultimately, it calls for a full investigation and structural reforms of financial institutions to insure accountability by the white-collar perpetrators who profited from the misery of their victims. It's a call to action: if action is not taken real lessons will not be learned or applied and another crisis may be looming as the underlying problems are still there.

The "News Dissector" spent a year and half on this investigation, following up on his book, "Plunder," that predicted the crisis and an earlier film, "In Debt We Trust," that explored America's rising credit burden at the time. This former CNN and Emmy award winning ABC News producer was labeled an "alarmist" and his initial finding was greeted with denial. This early work is now seen as prophetic despite understating the full impact of an ongoing crisis that has not yet ended.

"This is a story that must be told if economic justice is to have any meaning," says Schechter, "Plunder demands a full investigation into who is responsible for the crisis and an appropriate punishment - a "jail out" - for the wrongdoers at a time when the debate about the crisis and what to do about it is treated so superficially on every media outlet. This crisis is not about the unintentional mistakes of a greedy few but a crime that effects us all.'

Plunder is directed by Danny Schechter for Globalvision, Inc., with Ray Nowosielski, as the producer.

Who's Counting? Marilyn Waring on Sex, Lies and Global Economics

In this feature-length documentary, Marilyn Waring demystifies the language of economics by defining it as a value system in which all goods and activities are related only to their monetary value. As a result, unpaid work (usually performed by women) is unrecognized while activities that may be environmentally and socially detrimental are deemed productive. To remedy this, Waring maps out an alternative economic vision based on the idea of time as the new currency. http://www.nfb.ca/

Crapshoot : The Gamble with Our Wastes

A hazardous mix of waste is flushed into the sewer every day. The billions of litres of water - combined with unknown quantities of chemicals, solvents, heavy metals, human waste and food - where does it all go? And what does it do to us? Filmed in Italy, India, Sweden, the United States and Canada, this bold documentary questions our fundamental attitudes to waste. Does our need to dispose of waste take precedence over public safety? What are the alternatives?

One of the higher-profile participants at the Cochabamba climate conference was the former president of the United Nations General Assembly, Father Miguel d’Escoto. A Roman Catholic priest from Nicaragua, d’Escoto served as foreign minister in Daniel Ortega’s government from 1979 to 1990. He joins us to talk about the failures of the UN, the importance of the Bolivia climate summit, why Latin America doesn’t need the United States, and much more.

Hambre de soja from miquel gual on Vimeo.

No forma ciudadanos, garantiza súbditos.

"Memoria del saqueo" (Social Genocide)

http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=8B60CF40AEF6BBDA

Fernando E. Solanas

Bill Moyers Journal: William K. Black on Fraud and Criminogenic Culture

On Thursday, April 22, President Barack Obama made the case for increased regulation of the financial industry in a televised speech at Cooper Union in New York City. It was widely billed as President Obama's chance to harness the momentum behind reforming Wall Street and move forward the bills being considered in the House and Senate. Those measures face stiff opposition from most of the Republican Party and an army of lobbyists from Wall Street who have the ear of members of Congress on both sides of the aisle.
Watch Video
William K. Black thinks President Obama didn't acknowledge a key component in the financial crisis that the bills before Congress won't address — fraud. A former regulator who helped crack down on massive fraud during the savings and loan crisis in the 1980s, Black tells Bill Moyers on THE JOURNAL that, despite evidence of fraud at the top banks, prosecutions seem far away. "If you go back to the savings and loan debacle, we got more than a thousand felony convictions of the elite. These are not, you know, tellers or something. We today have zero convictions, zero indictments, zero arrests of any of the elite, non-prime lenders that, through their fraud, drove this crisis."

Michael Moore’s Capitalism: A Love Story comes home to the issue he’s been examining throughout his career: the disastrous impact of corporate dominance on the everyday lives of Americans (and by default, the rest of the world).

But this time the culprit is much bigger than General Motors, and the crime scene far wider than Flint, Michigan. From Middle America, to the halls of power in Washington, to the global financial epicenter in Manhattan, Michael Moore will once again take film goers into uncharted territory. With both humor and outrage, Michael Moore’s Capitalism: A Love Story explores a taboo question: What is the price that America pays for its love of capitalism? Years ago, that love seemed so innocent.

Today, however, the American dream is looking more like a nightmare as families pay the price with their jobs, their homes and their savings. Moore takes us into the homes of ordinary people whose lives have been turned upside down; and he goes looking for explanations in Washington, DC and elsewhere.

What he finds are the all-too-familiar symptoms of a love affair gone astray: lies, abuse, betrayal… and 14,000 jobs being lost every day. Capitalism: A Love Story is both a culmination of Moore’s previous works and a look into what a more hopeful future could look like. It is Michael Moore’s ultimate quest to answer the question he’s posed throughout his illustrious filmmaking career: Who are we and why do we behave the way that we do?

Antarctica research suspended

Scientists have been ordered to suspend their controversial Antarctica 'ocean fertilization' experiment. Science correspondent  Julian Rush reports.

Scientists on board a German polar research ship off Antarctica have been ordered by the German government to suspend their controversial "ocean fertilisation" experiment - because it may be in breach of an international treaty.

A British team is part of the joint Indian-German expedition in the Southern ocean. The researchers want to drop iron into the sea to create a bloom of plankton some 300 square km in size to see if it might one day be a way to reduce global warming.

But they have denied their research is intended to pave the way for the commercialisation of the technology.

Pat Mooney on the Dangers of Geoengineering and Manipulating the Planet to Combat Climate Change

Supporters of geoengineering have proposed radical ways to alter the planet to decrease the level of greenhouse gas emissions. Proposals include creating artificial volcanoes to pollute the atmosphere with sulfur particles, fertilizing the oceans and placing sun-deflecting aluminum foil in the sky. But opposition is growing to geoengineering. Here at the World Peoples’ Summit on Climate Change in Bolivia, the ETC Group is launching an international campaign against geoengineering experiments. We speak with the group’s founder, Pat Mooney, a Right Livelihood Award winner.

Pat Mooney: on Climate Change and Food Crisis

At the Breeding Diversity Conference in Santa Fe NM, Pat Mooney spoke out about the gravity of the food situation, especially for the poor peasants who are going hungry.

Green Gone Wrong

Heather Rogers discusses the myth of green capitalism at Socialism 2009 conference in Chicago

How does our economy undermine our "green" efforts?

Environmental writer Heather Rogers explains the pitfalls of the green revolution in her new book, Green Gone Wrong

In Green Gone Wrong environmental writer Heather Rogers blasts through the marketing buzz of big corporations and asks a simple question: Do today’s much-touted "green" products—carbon offsets, organic food, biofuels, and eco-friendly cars and homes—really work? Implicit in efforts to go green is the promise that global warming can be stopped by swapping out dirty goods for "clean" ones. But can earth-friendly products really save the planet?

This far-reaching, riveting narrative explores how the most readily available solutions to environmental crisis may be disastrously off the mark. Rogers travels the world tracking how the conversion from a "petro" to a "green" society affects the most fundamental aspects of life—food, shelter, and transportation. Reporting from some of the most remote places on earth, Rogers uncovers shocking results that include massive clear-cutting, destruction of native ecosystems, and grinding poverty. Relying simply on market forces, people with good intentions wanting to just "do something" to help the planet are left feeling confused and powerless.

Green Gone Wrong reveals a fuller story, taking the reader into forests, fields, factories, and boardrooms around the world to draw out the unintended consequences, inherent obstacles, and successes of eco-friendly consumption. What do the labels "USDA Certified Organic" and "Fair Trade" really mean on a vast South American export-driven organic farm? A superlow-energy "eco-village" in Germany’s Black Forest demonstrates that green homes dramatically shrink energy use, so why aren’t we using this technology in America? The decisions made in Detroit’s executive suites have kept Americans driving gas-guzzling automobiles for decades, even as U.S. automakers have European models that clock twice the mpg. Why won’t they sell these cars domestically? And what does carbon offsetting really mean when projects can so easily fail? In one case thousands of trees planted in drought-plagued Southern India withered and died, releasing any CO2 they were meant to neutralize.

Expertly reported, this gripping exposé pieces together a global picture of what’s happening in the name of today’s environmentalism. Green Gone Wrong speaks to anyone interested in climate change and the future of the natural world, as well as those who want to act but are caught not knowing who, or what, to believe to protect the planet. Rogers casts a sober eye on what’s working and what’s not, fearlessly pushing ahead the debate over how to protect the planet.

Propaganda Then and Now: What Orwell Did and Didn't Know

The New York Public Library

On the 60th anniversary of Orwell's Politics and the English Language, George Orwell described political speech as consisting "largely of euphemism, question-begging and sheer cloudy vagueness." Some six decades later, many symptoms of manipulation and propaganda diagnosed by Orwell persist on the American political landscape, along with new disinformation techniques enabled by modern technology.

Historians, scientists, philosophers, linguists, cognitive experts, journalists, image-makers, and public figures will debate in three separate sessions the current state of political discourse - and journalism's response to it - on the dawn of a bitterly contested presidential campaign - NYPL http://www.nypl.org/
